The Icon Issue

We’re welcoming the month of September by celebrating a returning star: Amelia Henderson. September symbolises a refocusing of energies as we slowly make our way to the year’s end. Clad in pieces from the Onitsuka Tiger Autumn/Winter 2024 Yellow Collection, Amelia opens up about how she is taking control of her own narrative, learning to be comfortable in her own skin and feeling like she’s finally “grown into herself” after her decades-long career.
This month, we’re celebrating an icon.

On The Cover: Amelia Henderson

Since we last saw her being named LSA100 Icon of The Year 2023 last year, she returns on set to give us the 411 on what she’s been up to. Fresh off filming her latest film Harimau Malaya: The Untold Journey, she is fired up for what’s to come. As someone who seems to be perpetually busy — with acting, hosting, fronting the red carpet both locally and internationally and of course, her podcast Studio Sembang — she opens up about the journey of reaching the confident, self-affirming era that she’s in now.

Rewriting Her Narrative
Having been in the entertainment industry for the bulk of her life, Amelia Henderson has undergone the best and worst of it, all while keeping true and real to herself. And now toward the end of her twenties, Amelia reflects on her own growth — both personally and professionally.

On how Studio Sembang gave her an expressive outlet

“We want to highlight and appreciate our country and our contributions and the people who have made things happen in the past and are moving them forward. That’s always been one of my passions. I’ve been working in this industry for such a long time and I’ve always felt like in digital media, there’s a way that we could have appreciated our own people better — not better, but I wanted to get more involved, you know? I wanted to be a part of it, because I’m such a fan of my own industry.”

On what she would tell her younger self

“Maybe I would’ve told her to believe in herself a little bit more. I feel like a lot of things in my life felt for me — and I don’t know if it feels like that for other people — but it felt like I achieved them late. I think, like, if there was anything I would tell myself from younger, it’s… to believe in yourself a little bit more. Because if you bit the bullet earlier… maybe not much would’ve changed. Maybe I’m exactly where I’m meant to be.”

On taking control of her own narrative

“I think the last few years have been giant, transformative years for me, and made me be in a position where I’ve had to really come head-to-head with my insecurities and be like, ‘Okay, do I actually believe that I’m capable of doing this?’ And then I realise it doesn’t matter. Your self-belief is a completely fictional thing that your brain chooses to believe in. So, you just have to commit and you just have to get it done. And I’ve tried to apply myself to things, and be more present rather than allowing somebody else to control the narrative. Now I control my own narrative, and I feel so much more comfortable with myself. And I grow into that every day.”
