The Queendom Issue
All hail the (beauty) queens. In our special trilogy of October beauty covers, we bring together pageant queens of the past and present to discuss how the notion of the 'beauty ideal' has transformed over the decades. Dolled up in Make Over Cosmetics, the beauty queens recount their own experinces in the pageant scene and how they have each grown to achieve bigger and better things in their respective careers.

Defining Beauty Standards Today
“It’s all very individualistic,” Elaine says of beauty standards today. “It’s really according to each person’s style. And it’s completely subjective.”
Beauty Beyond the Physical
“They want to see what’s inside you, what you can talk about. What is your understanding about love?” Francisca describes the beauty ideal today. “It’s beyond just the physical, it’s more of the aura that comes out.”
Breaking Beauty Barriers
"We’ve seen a new generation of audience accepting people from different nationalities and races, understanding and appreciating beauty of all kinds. The generation has really broken barriers."
In Pursuit of Purpose
“It is really important to grab every opportunity to really push yourself, step out of your comfort zone, and try something new. Learn as you grow, and take every challenges as opportunities for growth.”
Beauty with Grace
“I went in with such an open mind, it was to a point where I thought, ‘If I don’t win, at least I’ll have all my friends watching me this time around.’”
Remoulding the Beauty Ideal
“Growing up, I wanted to join Miss World Malaysia one day and see if I could win and actually represent my country. And I did. And then the following year, next thing I knew, Indian girls were joining pageants. I felt like, you know, I broke glass ceilings. I think in that sense, the biggest game changer is inclusivity. There’s no more cookie-cutter mould.”
