‘Ted Lasso’ season 4: Everything we know including the return of the OG cast members

One of Apple TV+’s most beloved shows, Ted Lasso, seemed to have ended with its third season in 2023. Each episode carried a sense of nostalgia, suggesting that the show, which features Jason Sudeikis as both star and co-creator, had come to an end. However, Deadline has confirmed what fans have long suspected: the streaming service is indeed developing Ted Lasso season 4.

While there has yet to be an official statement from either the platform or the creators, several leading publications have corroborated this news.

It is anticipated that Jason Sudeikis will return as an executive producer, although his involvement as a cast member in the new season remains unconfirmed since his role ended in the season 3 finale. Discussions regarding the cast for Ted Lasso season 4 indicate that the production team has secured option pickups for three principal cast members and is in negotiations to include additional actors. Regrettably, we hear one of the series’ OGs, Phil Dunster (Jamie Tart), may not reprise his role in the upcoming season, presumably due to a conflict with another show he is working on.

Well, there is much to explore regarding the returning cast of this celebrated soccer comedy and the expected release date of the Apple TV+ series. Continue reading for further details…

Currently, it has been reported by Deadline that Hannah Waddingham (Rebecca Walton), Brett Goldstein (Roy Kent) and Jeremy Swift (Leslie Higgins) have all received renewals from Warner Bros. Television.

The initiation of the process for a season 4 approval suggests that Jason Sudeikis (Ted Lasso), the principal creative force behind the series, is committed to another instalment, as the studio would not have moved forward without his agreement. So, he is for sure to join in the capacity of an executive producer but we can’t say if he will also star in the new season.

Similarly, there has been no announcement regarding the involvement of other co-creators and executive producers, Brendan Hunt (Coach Beard) and Juno Temple (Keeley Jones). The studio is anticipated to contact them next, along with any other cast members whose SAG-AFTRA contracts have lapsed.

It remains uncertain which additional actors may be approached for the fourth season; however, the cast has consistently expressed their willingness to return if given the chance, with many likely to make guest appearances.

Recently, Puck News’ Matthew Belloni reported that Phil Dunster, who plays the beloved character of AFC Richmond footballer Jamie Tartt, has not been retained by the series, presumably due to scheduling conflicts, as he is currently involved in two other series, Prime Video’s The Devil’s Hour and Apple’s Surface.

While the cast members for Ted Lasso season 4 are being approached, preparations are also being made to open a writer’s room. If all elements come together, the production on season 4 is eyeing an early 2025 start. This means the series won’t premiere anytime before 2026 since the filming will take about a year to wrap up.

Do we know anything about the potential plot of Ted Lasso season 4?

The finale of season 3, which aired in May 2023, hinted at a potential collaboration between Keeley Jones (Juno Temple) and Rebecca Welton (Hannah Waddingham) for a new initiative, the AFC Richmond Women’s Team. Additionally, all principal characters concluded their arcs on a positive note, with Ted last seen coaching his son on a soccer field in Kansas. So, season 4 may explore the future of Lasso’s son in soccer, as well as the new venture undertaken by Jones and Welton.

Furthermore, Channing Dungey, Chairman and CEO of Warner Bros. Television Group, previously indicated to Variety that the possibility for more ‘Ted Lasso’ remains open. He stated, “I mean, you watched the finale, there’s a little bit of a door that could be kicked back open if need be,” and emphasised, “I wouldn’t put the period on the end of that sentence just yet. There is still a lot of love for Ted Lasso. And I think that there still is a lot of enthusiasm on the part of Apple for Ted Lasso.”

Therefore, like many fans, we remain optimistic about the potential for an engaging plot in season 4.
