Bold frames and futuristic styles: The next big trends in eyewear

Say goodbye to dainty metal frames, eyewear just got a major upgrade. The stream of socials has landed us into the sub-stream of embellished eyewear trends, from oversized frames to minimalistic charms on the end pieces, we’re talking heavy frames, bolder lines, and solid colours. Taking cues from the athletic frenzy earlier this year alongside a shift towards a post-apocalyptic, futurism as seen in Mugler’s X Gentle Monster, it would require nothing less than rocket fuel to beat these monsters.

Slowly but steadily sunglasses are outgrowing their classic structures to evolve into a stronger, more prominent fashion accessory. No longer being stuck to the square and oblong shapes, the lenses are slowly growing wider, quirkier and sassier alongside the frame supporting them. The fashion majors from spring/summer ‘25 have subtly hinted towards the same. Be it at Vetements with their emphasis on dark lenses,  Armani’s colour-blocked rims, Courreges futuristic frames to Maison Margiela’s exaggerated lenses. At Lifestyle Asia, we sit down and ideate upon the same with a small forecast session of our own.

Eyewear trends we’re keeping an eye on:

Extraterrestrial and Astronautical

Yes, we’re pointing at the bug-eyed sunglasses. With yellow to the rims and blue to the centre of the lens, this category of unconventional, futuristic eyewear takes inspiration from its extraterrestrial alter ego. Channelling the peculiar, and drawing from the 90s cyberpunk aesthetic, the sunglasses and the eyewear are drawing on retro-futurism while walking a mile further. Having announced their arrival with Prada’s spring/summer latest, frames in hexagonal, oval structures with mirrored lenses, the metallicity of space-core is just about to get an update with this reboot.

It’s all about the rims

Hoarders, assemble! The geek-chic is on a revamp. With the designers reimagining the classic aviators, anything and everything is turning into the 80s and 90s this coming year. Timeless and chic, the Paris and New York Fashion Week witnessed the rise of frames stretching up to the forehead, with oversized visors to rectangular lenses with thicker, more visible rims. Witnessed in Saint Laurent’s Summer ‘25 collection, the onset of solid hues is just around the corner. We’re putting aside the rimless and dainty-looking glasses this coming season and picking a colour-popping option just as spring suggests.

Accessorising the accessory

From bags to eyewear charms, I think it’s the year of accessorization. With Gentle Monster X Jennie’s collaboration this year, the joy of adding a little bling to your spectacles has fuelled the ideas of embellished eyewear. Celebrating the playfulness of girlhood and personalisation, brands have stepped in with replaceable charms and studs for a new look every day. From creators like Ugly Cupid who’ve curated cyber-sigils add-ons to brands like Louis Vuitton adding charms to their mood board and collection, this little trend of personalisation is just taking shape.

Colourless is the new colourful

Arriving fresh from a laboratory, these colourless buddies are your pass to a subtle look this coming season. Given their non-tinted, translucent body, these frames go with every skin type and accentuate every face shape. A great option for those who are not looking forward to playing risque, colourless spectacles are easily team academia when it comes to it. This upsurge of transparent shades has added to the versatility of the accessory as per occasion. Being a prominent component of multiple runways this year, colourless frames are easily the safest pick amongst the up-coming collections.

Like an Engineer would

Your boyfriend’s spectacles are the next thing in eyewear trends. Half and half frames comprising a stronger top bar and a slimmer bottom are the heat this coming season. These heavy bridges give a professional yet edgy look that can fill in for events as they do for your office setup. Sister to the previously loved aviators, these half and half frames command attention in a room with their vintage appeal and mature appearance. Widely seen in the Milan Fashion Week as an element of streetwear alongside Seoul’s streets amidst the Seoul Fashion Week, the top bar frames are here to take it all by storm.
