Mazur is a court-certified expert in money laundering-related matters in both the U.S. and Canada who has worked as a federal agent for the last 27 years. He worked as a special agent at Customs as well as with the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigations (IRS-CI) for 11 years. He also had experience working with the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA). He was undercover as a money launderer within Pablo Escobar’s Medellin Cartel. He is the president of KYC Solutions and an author.
Mazur wrote a memoir titled The Infiltrator: My Secret Life Inside the Dirty Banks Behind Pablo Escobar’s Medellin Cartel. Mazur’s brainchild, Operation C-Chase, led to one of the biggest busts against Escobar’s Medellin Cartel in the 1980s. It exposed a tab of over USD 500 million that was paid by the deadly Colombian drug organization. Along with a female agent posing as his fiancée, Mazur was able to become a trusted person within the South American drug cartels and the international banking community, successfully carrying out his plan to bust them. With a state-of-the-art recording device packed in a simple, non-suspicious suitcase, Mazur infiltrated these nefarious circles.
In an interview with Gentleman’s Journal, Murzo recounted how the initial stages of the operation that would eventually bust the cartel of Pablo Escobar, who at one point was believed to bring in USD 420 million a week by controlling 80% of the cocaine smuggled into the United States.
He said, “I used to work with informants, get search warrants and put cases together with historical witnesses. I was put on a task force responsible for identifying the highest-level money launderers for the cartel. we collectively came to the conclusion that the most effective tool we could use would be a long-term undercover approach.” Given his educational background in administration and finance major along with his experience working in a bank and a brokerage firm, Mazur volunteered to be the undercover agent. He went through two years of intense psychological training to craft his undercover persona, Bob Musella.
With the help of various informants planted in the underworld, Musella already built a reputation as a wealthy businessman with criminal tendencies. In the interview, Mazur revealed that over “200 agents in the US, UK and a few other countries” were keeping him and his partner, Kathy Ertz, alive. During the mission, Mazur and his partner lived life king-size; from staying in USD 1,000-per-night hotel suites to driving Rolls-Royce convertibles.
Operation C-Chase culminated into Mazur and Ertz’s fake wedding where all the infamous corrupt bankers, money launderers and cartel members were invited. At his fake bachelor party, each of the infamous men was taken in separate limos and promptly arrested.
