Is ‘Normal People’ season 2 finally happening? Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar-Jones fuel its possibility

The cultural impact that Hulu’s 2020 show Normal People had on the hearts and minds of the youth is undeniable.

The show that follows the complicated relationship of two misunderstood characters Marianne Sheridan (Daisy Edgar-Jones) and Connell Waldron (Paul Mescal), navigating adulthood together is not your average ‘rich girl, poor guy’ love story.  With earnest performances and a strong storyline, it is replete with intense emotions and the joy of finding the one – the perfect pick-me-up people needed during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020.

Since its release, the romantic drama has garnered a massive fan following, who have waited long enough and rooted for a Normal People season 2. Now, it looks like the sun is coming out again in Tuscany with the show possibly getting renewed.

On that note, here’s everything you need to know about Normal People season 2, from its renewal status to its potential release date.

But first, what is ‘Normal People’ about?

The 12-episode series is a TV adaptation of Sally Rooney’s bestselling novel by the same name. The plot of Normal People chronicles the complex relationship between Marianne Sheridan and Connell Waldron through their time at secondary school in County Sligo on Ireland’s Atlantic coast, and later as undergraduate students at Trinity College Dublin.

Sheridan is an intelligent but oft-bullied and battered outsider from a wealthy family in need of comfort. Waldron is a shy yet popular jock, whose mother, Lorraine (Sarah Greene), happens to work at Marianne’s family’s home as a house cleaner. Their genuine and natural attraction sparks an on-and-off affair through the years that profoundly transforms them as individuals.

Yes, the chances are bright.

The show’s leading stars Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar-Jones dropped a cryptic Instagram post on 28 May, teasing a potential second season of the hit series.

Edgar-Jones posted a selfie with Mescal on her Instagram Stories. The pair could be seen holding up peace signs – or two fingers hinting at season 2 – as they grinned from ear to ear.

“We’ve got some news to share!!” she captioned the post. “Watch this space.”

The photo was also shared on the Instagram Stories of Element Pictures, the production company behind the Hulu series. Fans have been going crazy on social media, assuming the two fingers each actor held up was a reference to the show finally getting renewed for season 2.

In the past, both the leads had confessed to Digital Spy that they’d jump straight back in if given the opportunity to continue their love saga.

Who could be in the cast of ‘Normal People’ season 2?

Fans can expect the original cast to reprise their roles if season 2 gets greenlit with Daisy Edgar-Jones as Marianne Sheridan, Paul Mescal as Connell Waldron. Sarah Greene could come back as Lorraine Waldron, Connell’s single mother and Aislín McGuckin as Denise Sheridan, Marianne’s single, wealthy mother who is a solicitor.

While the first season covered the entire source material, the book had an open ending that can easily be followed up with Connell and Marianne’s future.

Previously talking about what might have happened next for their characters, Mescal had told Wonderland magazine in May 2020, “Oh, there’s no question that character to me is still alive and breathing and very much has a lot of life left to live, and has a relationship with Marianne that is maybe unfinished.”

In another interview with NME, Edgar-Jones echoed the same sentiment and shared, “That’s what’s so wonderful about the book. At the end, they’re very much alive and you’re left not knowing where they’re gonna go,” she said, adding, “It’s upsetting to read, but it’s also quite thrilling and realistic. We’ve left the series in a similar way. I think it’s quite interesting to leave it open.”

So, season 2 could continue their love story and see the sweethearts get married. It could also focus on a different chapter of their life that’s set, say, 10 years later.
