LSA “Whips” takes a look at the people of Hong Kong and their connection with their cars. From classics to hypercars, amazing vehicles are seen all over the city but rarely do we get a chance to get close and personal to them or to learn about how their owners come to possess them and what it’s like owning them in the city.
In our last episode, Matt Chung gave us a tour of his futuristic Toyota Supra A70 from 1990, but for this episode, we’re doing something different. Heading into the realm of ultra-luxury, we look at the Rolls-Royce Spectre electric vehicle.
The marque’s most aerodynamic product yet, the Spectre sees several interesting details including a redesigned Spirit of Ecstasy hood mascot that took hundreds of hours to design. One of its coolest features can be found in the 1.5-metre-long doors. As the largest doors ever in a Roll-Royce car (they had the keep these proportions to maintain the coupe aesthetic), each door is motor-assisted and can automatically close, and will automatically slow itself down when it senses it is being opened to fast or abruptly.
One of the reasons we went ASMR on this one was simple because, while this EV packs tonnes of technology and impeccable software, the tactile elements of Rolls-Royce are all here. You’re surrounded by premium material and craftsmanship once inside and we wanted that to be heard — from the milled aluminium air vents, and plush leather, down to how solid the doors feel when you close them. Another cool visual detail can be found in the Starlight headliner and doors. If you watch closely, you can find a shooting “Star” among the thousands of lights on the headliner that appears at random.
The Rolls-Royce Spectre is most likely the most luxurious (and expensive) EV I’ll ever get to experience. If you’re wondering how much this thing costs after HK taxes, I did some digging and it will most likely run you around the range of HKD 8 million HKD.
