Arguably one of the most innovative companies in camera technology right now, DJI has been a pioneer for content creators of all kinds. With the release of the DJI Mic 2, audio recording technology has taken a step forward and is enabling creators to create (with better audio).
Whenever DJI releases something new, people can’t seem to help but pay attention. Being a pioneer in multiple faucets of camera technology, audio, drone, and so much more, many of the industry’s standards have been dominated by the innovative brand.
So when DJI released their Mic 2 system, it certainly made waves in the audio technology space.
What is “32-bit float”?
For the last few years or so, it seemed like wireless audio capturing technology has remained rather stagnant. Every so often there were newer models and newer iterations, but nothing that was exciting. That was until about half a year ago when Rode released their Wireless Pro system with 32-bit float that sent the internet into a frenzy.
What exactly is 32-bit float?
Basically it allows for high-quality recording to seamlessly adapt to complex sound environments, and has a dynamic range of up to 1528dB – essentially your audio won’t ever peak.
In more layman terms, it allows for a lot more flexibility in recording. If you’ve ever noticed “peaking” in audio recording, aka it’s too loud and it all blends into just ear damage, then with 32-bit float you won’t get that and the dynamics of the higher audio levels can still be recorded.
With the Mic 2, it seemed like a no brainer that it would have 32-bit float as well, putting the DJI Mic 2 into the forefront of the microphone game.
Bluetooth
Although 32-bit float is arguably the feature I’m most excited about, there are plenty of other features to highlight.
The DJI Mic 2 is bringing bluetooth connectivity to their transmitters. So if your receiver has ran out of battery or if you forgot it, or didn’t bring the right phone adapter, you can still record audio wirelessly via bluetooth on your smartphones.
This seems like a last-resort type feature though, as highlighted in Potato Jet’s video, it seems like the quality takes a hit when compared to using the receiver system. But it is still better than having no wireless audio recording system.
Keep it in the family
Some of the most exciting cameras today are made by DJI. The DJI Osmo Pocket 3 has been hailed as one of the most exciting cameras in recent history and the Osmo Action 4 is many people’s go-to action/vlogging camera.
With the DJI Mic 2, it seems like a no-brainer for Osmo users to buy into the system. With wireless connectivity without a transmitter, it is super easy to capture great audio without the receiver and everything just works seamlessly.
The DJI Mic 2 is now available to order from their website and the 2 transmitter option is going for $1839 HKD whereas the one transmitter option is going for $1199 HKD.
