Apple cuts Vision Pro shipments due to low demand

It seems as if the excitement towards the Apple Vision Pro is not translating into sales.

While the tech giant’s mixed-reality headset garnered tons of media exposure when unveiled, and has been the subject of several viral videos across social media, signs indicate that it has not met its forecasted unit of sales number of 700,000 to 800,000.

The $3,499 Apple Vision Pro’s sales numbers look to have dropped to around 400,000 to 450,000 units for 2024, which is slightly under its first batch shipment number of 500,000 units. This may be a result of some other products on the market like Meta’s Quest 3 which Mark Zuckerberg calls the superior product, and the better value proposition at 7x less in price.

These news numbers, according to Ming-Chi Kuo, are causing Apple to reconsider its strategy for a potential lower-tiered version to reduce costs, and to review its head-mounted display (HMD) product roadmap altogether. His findings indicate that this weaker-than-expected demand for the Apple Vision Pro gives evidence that MR headset devices are still not ready for mainstream adoption, meaning it is still considered a niche market.

In other tech news, Tesla’s new Model 3 Performance goes 0-60 MPH in 2.9 seconds.
