Pininfarina and Honda‘s iconic HP-X Supercar will be brought back to life at this year’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance automotive show.
Slated as the supercar’s North American debut for Monterey Car Week, the Honda HP-X concept was originally unveiled at the 1984 Turin Motor Show. Designed by the legendary Italian design firm, Pininfarina, the car references the cockpit of fighter jets and was the original design that inspired Honda’s NSX sportscar.
Acura Design Executive Dave Marek comments on the HP-X Concept, “The Honda HP-X Concept was the star of the 1984 Turin Auto Show, showcasing elements of engineering excellence and cutting-edge design, with extreme wedge-shape styling that continues to inspire future generations of car designers and engineers.
40 years later, the retro-futuristic concept can be appreciated once more after an extensive restoration project by Pininfarina. Key design traits in the HP-X can be seen in the wedge-shaped design and grooves in the bodywork that extend to the mid-mounted 2.0-liter DOHC 24-valve V6 engine. There are also no doors in the car. Instead, a large removable single-piece Perspex canopy acts as the windscreen, roof, and spoiler.
The Pininfarina Honda HP-X also made use of ground-effect aerodynamics, and highly technical and alternative materials like honeycomb panels, carbon fiber, and Kevlar. This cool bit of Pininfarina Honda history makes its Pebble Beach debut on August 18.
