Sony officially reveals the all-new Playstation 5 Pro

Following months of rumours and speculation, Sony officially debuts the PlayStation 5 Pro, revealing official images, outlining upgrades, and setting official release dates for the mid-generation console.

With the PS5 celebrating its fourth birthday this November, players today are now looking for a more powerful console that can run higher-fidelity graphics with smoother frame rates. To keep up with demands, Sony felt it was time to introduce its most advanced and innovative console hardware to date.

In a nutshell, the PlayStation 5 Pro promises a “larger GPU, advanced ray tracing, AI-Driven upscaling, and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR).” The GPU allows for 28% faster memory and up to 45% faster rendering for gameplay, the new Ray Tracing provides more dynamic reflection and refraction of light, and Spectral Super Resolution provides significantly sharper image clarity through machine-learning technology.

New features include support for Wi-Fi 7 as well as VRR and 8K gaming. We also see the introduction of PS5 Pro Game Boost, which will reportedly apply to more than 8,500 backward-compatible PS4 games. The feature acts to stabilise or improve the resolution on select PS4 and PS5 games which will be labeled with a PS5 Pro Enhanced tag within their title. Games featured include Alan Wake 2, Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Gran Turismo 7, Hogwarts Legacy, and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

Without deviating from the height or width of the current PS5, the PS5 Pro nearly doubles the frame rate while offering fidelity-level image quality. All current PS5 products and accessories such as the VR2 and Access controllers will remain compatible and all user interface and network services will stay the same. Additionally, players can order an Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive as an add-on and swap console covers when they become available.

Pre-orders for the PS5 Pro begin on September 26, 2024 in select regions with the official launch in Hong Kong scheduled for November 7. Suggested retail prices are as follows: $699.99 USD/ £699.99 GBP/ €799.99 EUR/ ¥119,980 JPY.
