Is ‘Mr. Plankton’ returning for a season 2? Here’s what we know

Mr. Plankton had a heartwrenching finale, which has made fans wonder whether a season 2 of the K-drama will ever happen. The show has been winning the hearts of critics and fans alike since its release on 8 November, which is understandable as it was one of the most anticipated Korean dramas of 2024. So, here’s everything we know about the possibility of season 2 of Mr. Plankton.

Directed by Hong Jong-chan and penned by scriptwriter Jo Yong, the latter of whom is known for highest-rated romantic K-dramas like It’s Okay to Not Be Okay (2020), Mr. Plankton’s story follows terminally ill Hae-jo’s (played by Woo Do-hwan) journey to find his biological father in what may be the final adventure of his life. He is accompanied by his ex-girlfriend Jae-mi (played by Lee You-mi), who after learning about her premature menopause, chooses to run away from her marriage with Eo-heung (played by Oh Jung-se), an honest man from a traditional Korean family.

Talking about the main message of the Netflix original K-drama, director Hong said during a 2024 press conference, “It is actually hard to pinpoint a single message that the drama aims to convey, but one thing is certain: Everything, like plankton, carries inherent value and purpose. While plankton may be tiny and nearly invisible, it plays a vital role in producing oxygen, helping sustain life on Earth. The title suggests that everyone, no matter how small they feel, plays an essential role in the world.”

Over the 10 episodes of Mr. Plankton, viewers of the K-drama see ex-lovers Hae-jo and Jae-mi reunite for the former’s journey to find his biological father, which could also prove to be the last chapter of his life, as Hae-jo is suffering from an incurable brain disease. The ending of the series shows that while Hae-jo fails to find his biological father, he and Jae-ni explore Korea on wheels after the former reunites with Choi Yeong-jo, the man who raised him.

In the final moments of the show, Hae-jo and Jae-mi are playing in the snow in a beautiful location in Korea when Hae-jo’s nose starts bleeding. He realises that his time has come and recalls how he always wanted to die under “the dazzling blue sky”. The show ends with the lovers confessing love for each other and Hae-jo taking his last breath while smiling at Jae-mi.

Is season 2 of the K-drama Mr. Plankton on the cards?

So far, there is no official information from the makers about season 2 of the K-drama Mr. Plankton being in the works.

Fans, too, believe that the final episode perfectly summed up the stories of all the characters. Additionally, Mr. Plankton was released on Netflix as a limited series, which further lessens the possibility of a season 2.
