What is the viral TikTok ‘OatZempic’ drink?

There’s a viral weight loss trend going around TikTok called ‘OatZempic.’ Is it actually as effective as ozempic, and why are so many people trying it? Let’s find out.

Ozempic has become quite the craze worldwide. Amongst other medical uses, the drug is used to treat diabetes by helping patients to help lower their blood sugar. However, it has been glamourised by the media as an effective weight loss tool, leading to its widespread use among celebrities, influencers, and common people alike. Some famous personalities such as Oprah Winfrey, Kate Winslet, and Elon Musk have admitted to using the drug, while others are speculated to have used it due to their “ozempic face,” a hollowed appearance caused by the loss of facial fat.

It’s worth noting that ozempic is an expensive drug, costing almost USD 1000 to use on a monthly basis. However, TikTok users have found a budget-friendly alternative to ozempic, which they call OatZempic.

What is the viral TikTok OatZempic drink?

The OatZempic trend is a clever play on words with ‘Ozempic’, but it does not contain any of the actual drug. To make this blended drink, just combine 1/2 cup of oats with 1 cup of water, and add 1/2 lime juice and cinnamon (optional) to taste. Some may even add half an apple. It is considered a budget-friendly alternative to Ozempic, as it helps to “curb one’s appetite.” Some even claim to have lost up to “40 pounds in just two months.”

Does OatZempic work like?

It is important to note that we cannot compare the weight loss trend of consuming an oat drink to a drug like Ozempic. This is because Ozempic is a hormone that affects the brain, while the oat drink only helps make one feel full for a few hours, since oats contain beta-glucan. Therefore, the main reason why people are losing weight by following this trend is most likely due to a calorie deficit.

For example, by substituting this drink (even though it is not a meal replacement) for breakfast, one is already consuming fewer calories than usual. The oat, lemon, and water concoction is around 120 calories. When compared to a typical breakfast of eggs, bacon, and toast with butter, which is almost 700 calories, of course, consuming the drink cuts the amount of calories by over 70%.

Moreover, those who experience drastic weight loss are more likely to replace a higher-caloric meal with this drink. All in all, it is still best to eat nutritious food, exercise, and drink loads of water. Doing fad trends like this isn’t sustainable in the long run when it comes to achieving your health and fitness goals.
