Wazup Running Club

Launching a running club just before the height of the pandemic poses challenges, especially with social distancing measures and stay-at-home protocols but Wazup Running Club did just that. Now, the club has weekly events, hundreds of members, a clothing line, and even its own coffee shop. Impressive, isn’t it? The founders are also a close bunch—five brothers and cousins—who came together for the love of running. The crew remains busy with weekly runs throughout Hong Kong such as Urban Wednesday and Breakfast Saturday. They’re also spicing things up by offering unique events on a Saturday every month ranging from GPS drawing-inspired runs to trail runs and collaborative ventures.

Shelter Athletics
Shelter Athletics is more than just a running group. It’s also a social club that fundraises for local charities to give back to the community. Yes, this group of running and jogging lovers use their love for the sport to raise funds for different communities in Hong Kong. This is even though they hadn’t been around for long. It’s all thanks to Jason Lam who got inspired during the pandemic to go on runs and post about them on Instagram. Soon enough, assuming that many others felt dampened by the situation, joined him eventually creating a small community of runners. The club has partnered with charities such as More Than a Run, Movember, and More Good. They hold runs every Sunday at 8 am as well as a girl’s night run every Monday. Plus, they have a bi-weekly Thursday run in Kowloon if a weekly affair is not your thing.
How to join: No sign-up required, in their words “If you’re reading this and want to join, just do it – you’re welcome here”.

Runs and That

Runs and That is the running community of apparel brand Wyrd Running. The running club has already hosted a few events despite being a newcomer to the running scene. Of course, most of it so far has been to promote or support Wyrd Running’s latest drops. But it’s also a mix of your regular five to seven-kilometre community run to more fun ones with live DJs and drinks. The usual running spot is at the Tsim Sha Tsui Waterfront towards the end of weekdays. It’s a breezy five-kilometre run alongside the dazzling Hong Kong view. Tunes and drinks are always welcome too. To stay updated on their events, simply join the WhatsApp group.

Harbour Runners
View this post on Instagram
As their club name suggests, members of Harbour Runners usually run along the waterfront during their weekly Wednesday night runs. If you ask me, that’s a great way (excuse, even) to admire the spectacular Hong Kong harbour view at night. A great companion while breaking a sweat. The group also quashes those hub hubs and stereotypes about creatives only being stuck in their studios or rooms all day. As it turns out, a lot of the members are from the creative industry which makes sense. After all, the club serves as a springboard to get into running, especially for those who love a good view.
How to join: Visit the official Facebook page for updates about the weekly runs.

Midnight Runners

For night owls who love midnight runs, enter Midnight Runners. This running club is a global community with a presence across 15 cities. Don’t let its name fool you though, you don’t actually have to run in the middle of the night or break of dawn. The night runs start at 7:30 pm every Tuesday at Pier 3. That’s a great option, especially during summer when the daytime heat can be too much to bear. Members can opt for a six-kilometre run or the more challenging 10-kilometre run. If you happen to find yourself overseas, you can check out if the club operates there and join them for a run too via the group’s international website. Otherwise, stay updated on the Hong Kong chapter here.
How to join: The club uses ‘Heylo’ to organise their events. There, you’ll find a weekly schedule and be able to book the events.

So, for ladies seeking a tight-knit running community, join the Hong Kong Ladies Road Runners Club.
