Following successful overseas shows in Singapore and Japan, artist David Leung now brings his works back to Hong Kong for a solo exhibition at Gallery by the Harbour titled “見餐不是餐 (See Food NOT See Food).”

“見餐不是餐 (See Food NOT See Food)” was inspired by the ancient Chinese saying: “見山是山,見山不是山,見山還是山“ which describes the three stages of perceiving reality in life. When you first look at a mountain, it’s a mountain. You may look closer and see something else based on its form, texture, etc. but when you pause and look again it’s still just a mountain.
“I try to see beyond the superficial aspects of the world through captivating photography, by employing the power of pareidolia, a psychological phenomenon where the mind finds familiar patterns where none exist, discovering the hidden faces in my daily activity – Dining,” writes Leung.
Leung is described as a photographer artist specialising in “symmetrical pareidolism.” Breathing life into the finest bites, he transforms juicy burgers into samurais and tonkatsu ramen to resemble a chubby corgi. Some symmetrical faces are instantly recognisable while others are more up for interpretation. Many of the highlights from Leung’s exhibition are from his “Beasts From Feasts” series which features collaborations with various fine dining establishments in Hong Kong including Auor and The Chairman.
