Ryo Matsuoka weaves a ‘Sky beyond words.’ at WKM Gallery

Artist Ryo Matsuoka is returning to Hong Kong for his second exhibition at WKM Gallery titled Sky beyond words.

Ryo Matsuoka is a multifaceted artist who works across a range of media including painting, drawing, embroidery, murals, and large-scale installations. He rose to fame through the Tokyo street art scene of the ’90s and has since continued to challenge himself, drawing from his travels and personal experiences to display new perspectives. In addition to bridging the worlds between street art and fine art, Matsuoka is also respected in the fashion world with notable collaborations and commissioned projects with the likes of Yohji Yamamoto, Hong Kong boutique Joyce, and Louis Vuitton.

His latest exhibition, showing at WKM Gallery between 21 June and 3 August, highlights his embroidered textile works. Created by needle, thread, and the push and pull of fabric, each piece subconsciously embodies a pure expression of a particular thought and emotion. Matsuoka retains a child-like innocence in the act of creation and describes his process as the act of “play.”
