The Archivist Augurs, the Larper Dreams

In this group exhibition, artists Dony Cheng, Dave Chow, These Faces (a.k.a. Jennifer Yeung), and Brandon Tay ponder our society’s relationship with technology. The four artists share a sceptical view of the world’s approach to technology and its relationship to the material world. Inspired by Hong Kong philosopher Yuk Hui’s 2020 essay, “For a Planetary Thinking,” the four artists allow machines to break free from the task it was designed for and instead create art.

Transport yourself to a world of Hong Kong nostalgia in this art exhibition at Current Plans. In Mass Transit Railway, Sing Jantze Tse takes everyday objects from transportation and public spaces. These items are placed next to a multi-screen display and sound playback. The installation features footage from the pandemic and the artist’s childhood memories on VHS. As the train travels, it questions the role of the tourist guide and the impacts of mass tourism on his hometown.

MAIN CHARACTER

What does it mean to have “main character energy”? WOAW Gallery explores this in a group exhibition curated by Lisa Boudet, featuring 12 contemporary artists. Each artist answers the question through art. Their works exude confidence, charisma, and self-assuredness. The gallery space is draped in red curtains, a callback to the grand theatre stage. As visitors walk through, they are encouraged to reflect on whether they are the audience or the actors. The question extends to real life — do we control our own lives, or are we merely background characters in other people’s lives?
Date: July 30 – August 24

Find Me At The End Of The Cave
Step into “the end of the cave” and discover the secret language between Marcelo Canevari and Ornella Pocetti. Seefood Room invites visitors to explore the dialogue between the Argentine painters, curated by City of Talents. The two artists continue a tradition that started between Canevari and his late father. They take turns painting on a canvas like a game of Exquisite Corpse. The resulting work envisions a serene nature with uncanny scenes and strange creatures. As the audience, try to decipher or simply admire Canevari and Pocetti’s shared universe in this exhibition.

Cloud Chamber: Central Highlands Journey
Among the art exhibitions happening in Hong Kong this August 2024, Cloud Chamber tackles a unique topic. Ho Chi Minh-based collective Art Labor proudly showcases their work in the past decade with the Jrai community. Presented with Para Site, the collective invites visitors to look beyond the community’s complex history. Their home has been affected by war, industrialisation, and missionary activity. In this exhibition, Jrai artists take their narrative back into their own hands with Art Labor. Their works explore the collision of science and mythology as well as human and non-human.
