ART021 is just around the corner, where over 70 galleries will present their works. One such gallery is Mao Space, presenting the “Archaic Procession” in the main GALLERIES section. Featuring works by Lebanese artist Nadim Karam, the exhibition invites visitors to explore an otherworldly parade walking amongst our lives.
Nadim Karam is returning to Hong Kong after more than a decade. This time, he’ll present his solo exhibition, “Archaic Procession”, with Mao Space. Keep reading below to find out more about the exhibition.
A look into “Archaic Procession”
The artist takes inspiration from his personal experiences and urban observations as he walks around the city. He believes there are “invisible spirits” that walk the streets of cities with us. Whether they’re souls of former residents, buildings, animals, or plants, they come from the city’s past history.
Karam brings these spirits to life in an array of enchanting sculptures. For the first time, this parade of spirits will be making its way to Hong Kong. The exhibition calls visitors to observe the mischievous and contemplative and think back to a time long past. As the procession keeps growing, they march endlessly into the future.
Highlights from the exhibition
Karam uses materials like stainless steel, corten steel, and crystals to create his sculptures. One of the key pieces from the exhibition is Hannibal on an Elephant, depicting a mysterious figure atop an abstract elephant. The figure seems to be leading the procession, pointing a hand forward. The sculpture is likely a callback to the Carthaginian general Hannibal, who famously led his troops with war elephants.
Animals are a common theme in Karam’s works, featured in other pieces such as Diva on Rhino and Tubby Elephant. Human-like figures also appear in Boy Carrying a Cloud and Couple, evoking the familiar emotions we experience in life. As each unique sculpture comes together to form the parade, it showcases the diverse stories and experiences that inhabit a city.
