LE SSERAFIM is on a roll and the girls are definitely girling. Just half a year since their third mini-album ‘Easy’ landed them with their first-ever Billboard Hot 100 single, the quintet is back. And of course, as fearless as ever. Their fourth mini-album ‘Crazy’ with the title track of the same name is already proving to be a banger. This five-track album is all about having fun, embracing what makes your hearts race, and of course, going “crazy together with LE SSERAFIM”.
With the release, the quintet ventures into new heights, trying bold new genre choices ranging from EDM-style house to rock. “I want people to feel that LE SSERAFIM really enjoys doing what they do,” they revealed during the media showcase. And it’s quite evident that they do despite the challenges, as they seek to expand their musical repertoire. Yunjin, most especially, makes her debut as a main producer with the track ‘Crazier’ this time. Members Chaewon, Sakura, Yunjin, Kazuha, and Enchaue also tried voguing for the first time in the music video of their lead single, ‘Crazy’ adding fresh new elements that will delight new and old listeners. The track has already been praised for paying homage to the ballroom scene and the group’s collaboration with House of Juicy Couture for the music video.
Lifestyle Asia got the chance to see a preview of the lead track and learn more details about the album during the media showcase. We summarise what LE SSERAFIM had to share below.
LE SSERAFIM on ‘Crazy’, their new album and title track
Tell us about what this album is about.
This album simply invites everyone to go crazy with LE SSERAFIM. That is a very simple message. Anyone may have the experience of doing something exhilarating for the first time. That’s what we try to capture.
When you listen to our mini album, you’ll get the passion that we have as a team and that we are capable of just going into anything.
How about your title track, ‘Crazy’?
It’s an EDM-based house genre which is also our first foray into this genre. It gives off the feeling of excitement when you’re doing something for the first time. That’s the kind of message. We thought that message was very in line with this genre too. The minute we first heard it, I thought it really got me going. It was just so energetic, so I loved it. It really captures LE SSERAFIM and our team’s bright energy, and the beat is so exciting.
When we were preparing for our last album, we were already working on ‘Crazy’ as well. So, when we wrapped the shoot for the music video of ‘Easy’, we already heard the track. The two are so different from one another so we got excited about how we’ll be able to show our fans something that’s completely new.
Speaking of something new, how was voguing for you?
We tried voguing for the first time as part of our choreography. The more we tried voguing, we realised that it’s really important to be expressive. It’s trendy and chic so it was hard to be as expressive with a genre like that in the beginning. But thankfully, one of our main dancers has a lot of experience in voguing, so that helped us a lot.
It requires a lot of core strength. While we have a lot of muscle and pride ourselves in being quite fit, it was still so difficult. One of the moves required a lot of core strength because you have to stand on one leg, so it was really hard to maintain our balance. We had to concentrate on the move.
Our performance director told us that we had to use our hands as if they were weapons. We tried to remember that direction as we practised every day.
What are you crazy about now?
While preparing for this mini album we talked about what makes us go crazy. What are we crazy for? It was really cool to see how all of us had similar answers. All of us were really crazy for the team. Given that we’re artists, we all really loved being on stage, dancing and singing from a very young age. So, I think we just really grateful that we were able to go crazy for something that we like, and we now get to do that.
Do you have any behind-the-scenes stories from filming the music video?
In the music video, you’ll see a couple of dancers who are actually very famous in the United States. They flew all the way to Korea, which we are very grateful for. It was great to work with them. There was a particular scene where we worked as a group with the dancers, and I feel like that explosive energy that we felt on set really showed on the screen.
And let’s talk about the B slide track. Yun-jin, you are the main producer for one of the tracks, right?
Yes, for the last track, ‘Crazier’ I am the main producer. When we were making this album, the producers told me to show them the kind of crazy that I resonate with. So, I wanted to convey the message through this track. It’s about dedicating yourself to being crazy or even moments without constraint.
What was the process like?
‘Crazier’ is not just about what I feel but also about what my bandmates feel. We had a lot of conversations to weave our thoughts as well as our generation’s thoughts into this song. That’s why this track feels all the more special to me and the members. So, it was a very fun challenge for me. I’m happy I got to know more about myself and my bandmates too.
What do you expect from this album?
We want people to feel that LE SSERAFIM really enjoys doing what they do. We work tirelessly for what we love to do. The message of this album is to just go crazy together with us. So, we’ll present performances where we can all just go crazy and enjoy the sizzling summer.
