The month kicked off with the inaugural edition of ART021 Hong Kong. The fair may now be over, but the celebration of art doesn’t stop. Check out these eight art exhibitions opening across Hong Kong this September 2024, all while staying dry. This time, the city gears up to welcome visionaries from all over the world. From Japan and mainland China to Indonesia, Italy, and a group of Black artists, we’re set to see a diverse range of cultures this month. Of course, local artists are getting some love too with a spotlight on everyday sights and emerging names from Hong Kong’s art scene.

Check out this gathering of young, contemporary artists at New Art Est-Ouest Auctions’ gallery. Building on its previous exhibition, the show moves beyond the comfort of the present. The works of art invite visitors to explore the uncertainty and possibilities of the future through a sensory onslaught. The exhibition features seasoned and emerging contemporary artists such as Emi Kuraya, KYNE, Cheung Tsz-hin, Izumi Kato, Mr. Koo, and more. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Mind HK, a local charity dedicated to mental health efforts across the city.

Meridiem
Japanese artist Megumi Shinozaki is hosting her first solo exhibition in Hong Kong with WKM Gallery. The show showcases Shinozaki’s signature floral artworks with around 200 brand-new paper floral works handmade by the artist. Alongside it is a unique fresh flower installation featuring local flora. Juxtaposing the eternal paper flowers with the ephemeral blooms, the artist brings to question the natural circle of life and the line between alive and not. Art in Residence: City Geometry
As part of its “Art in Residence” exhibition series, Cordis Hotel presents Hiuman Lam’s photography in City Geometry for its 9th anniversary. As the artist behind the renowned photography platform Hong Kong Reminiscence, Lam’s works bring a new perspective to Hong Kong’s landscape. Whether it’s the everyday skyscrapers, temples, schools, public estates, and other Hong Kong buildings, Lam’s lens captures the city’s essence. Through this exhibition, visitors can take a step back and admire the beauty in the city’s oft-overlooked sights.

Italian sculptor Matteo Pugliese makes a return to Hong Kong in Memento, a solo exhibition with Kwai Fung Hin Art Gallery. Spanning over two decades of work with over 40 pieces on display, the show provides a glimpse into the artist’s evolution. A master in his craft, Pugliese has created sculptures out of mediums such as bronze, marble, terracotta, ceramics, and walnut wood. Visitors can expect some of his signature series and newer creations, exploring redemption and resilience, vulnerability and power, individuality and ancestry, faith and rebirth.

Water Line
September 2024 is all about bringing international artists to art exhibitions in Hong Kong. Water Line is a solo exhibition by Japanese artist ob, a notable name from Takashi Murakami’s Kaikai Kiki Gallery and presented by Perrotin Hong Kong. Dreamy pastels transport viewers to a gentle, misty world. Here, water is the medium. Familiar scenes like Hong Kong’s harbour meet the uncertainty of ob’s figures. Past, present, and future; the opposing and the contradictory; everything is united under the influence of water.

Social Abstraction
Social Abstraction is the second installation of a two-part exhibition curated by Antwaun Sargent. An intergenerational group of Black artists takes centre stage, using abstraction to discuss culture, perception, and their place in the universe. Many of these artists will be presenting in Hong Kong for the first time. The show will showcase a wide range of mediums. From common materials like oil and acrylic paint, ceramics, and resin, to unconventional ones like mosaic, hair glue, wigs, and textiles.

Sin Sin Fine Art, the first Hong Kong gallery to display Indonesian artists, continues this legacy with its latest show. In Extend, founder and artist Sin Sin Man joins Indonesian artists Dani Huda and Talitha Maranila in a group exhibiton. Each work explores nature and spirituality through different mediums. Dani Huda uses digital technology to photograph mystical figures, inspired by Indonesian myths. Talitha Maranila’s multi-media artworks mimic shapes often seen in nature, despite being inorganic. Meanwhile, Sin Sin reflects the works back onto the audience, interacting with the emerging artists’ works.

Word Play

This is the wordiest of all the art exhibitions you’ll see in Hong Kong this September 2024! Word Play celebrates Chinese characters, investigating and deconstructing the pictographic language. Alisan Fine Arts invites 19 artists across different generations on a journey of exploring contemporary Chinese art through “wordplay”. Walk through four distinct galleries, each with its own theme: Contemporary Calligraphy, Composing with Words, Word as Image, and Abstraction.
