After 28 years after its Hong Kong release, The God of Cookery will officially be making its way to theatres in Mainland China.
A comedic masterpiece, The God of Cookery captures Chow’s signature slapstick comedy film style that exaggerates everyday scenarios that often complicate the protagonist’s life.
Released in 1996, The God of Cookery stars Stephen Chow, Karen Mok, Vincent Kok, and Richard Ng, and follows the story of a cocky celebrity chef whose been set up to lose his title as the “God of Cookery.” Through a series of interactions and trials, he learns humility and approaches cooking in a new light while attempting to regain his lost title.
Like most Stephen Chow films, Chow enlisted his frequent collaborators and household Hong Kong names for this film. As one of Chow’s cult-classic films (Kung Fu Hustle is catching a second wind thanks to streaming platforms), The God of Cookery sits on a similar tier as Shaolin Soccer. Both titles are films that fans constantly rewatch every now and then for that hit of nostalgia.
While there’s no official statement on why the film is playing in the mainland after all these years, it’s great to see a classic piece of HK cinema get some love from a new generation of moviegoers. Look for the film to hit theatres in the Chinese mainland on August 31. We should also mention that there are definitely fans as the official Weibo post has already been viewed over two million times after the announcement on August 12.
