Do Patti ending explained: Untangling the twists, secrets, and final revelation
What is Do Patti movie all about?
Do Patti movie follows two young women Saumya and Shailee who are identical twin sisters. Residing in a small hill town in Uttarakhand they have grown up bitter with each other. When they were little, their mother died and the cause of her death is revealed later — it is part of the twist. But the event was traumatic for them, particularly Saumya, who is the more sensitive of the two. She suffers from mental health issues like depression and anxiety.
Shailee, though, is wilder and more carefree. The film begins as Vidya Jyothi is called to an incident involving Saumya and her husband Dhruv Sood (Shaheer Sheikh). Saumya accuses her husband of trying to kill her by unfastening her harness, something Dhruv categorically denies.
Cut back to months before, Vidya Jyothi finds something suspicious in the way Saumya’s face is almost always bruised. Though she (Saumya) claims it has nothing to do with her husband, Vidya believes otherwise. Eventually, the elderly woman who has nurtured the sisters (played by Tanvi Azmi) sits down with her and recounts the story.
The dark truth of Saumya and Dhruv’s marriage in the Do Patti movie
In the flashback, we see Saumya befriending Dhruv, who runs an adventure sports company. Charming and good-looking, Saumya is smitten and so is Dhruv. He helps her overcome her fears of heights by taking her for a paragliding ride. The two fall in love.
Enter Shailee, the more urbane, modern, and rebellious of the two sisters. The movie depicts her I-don’t-give-a-damn attitude by making her wear shorts and generally skimpy clothes and more often than not she has a lit cigarette in her hands. It’s all rather tacky. So Vidya is told by the woman that when Shailee arrived in the town, there was an instant attraction between her and Dhruv. And since Dhruv and Saumya had not made anything official, she could not protest if her sister and Dhruv became an item. Shailee, who sees her sister as an enemy, steals her boyfriend.
But Dhruv has a politician father who wants him to commingle with the local politicians. During one such meeting, Shailee gets besotted and embarrasses him in front of the man (who is apparently Uttarakhand’s tourism minister). Dhruv, after initially dating Saumya, and dumping her for Shailee, again links himself with Saumya — and they marry. However, Dhruv’s abusive tendencies soon surface, leading to a toxic marriage filled with emotional and physical violence.
Vidya Jyothi fervently wishes Saumya would file a complaint against Dhruv, but from Saumya’s point of view, if she destroys her marriage, Shailee will win. And that is what she cannot abide. So she suffers all the abuse silently, using makeup or clothing to conceal the bruises.
The twist in the tale
Eventually, after the paragliding incident, Saumya files a complaint against Dhruv, who frantically denies any wrongdoing. The case reaches a sessions court. From this point, the movie becomes a courtroom drama. It is rather dry, but the gist of it is that Dhruv is sentenced to prison for 13 years on charges of domestic violence and attempt to murder. The case is helped by multiple witness testimonies and the fact that Dhruv does not appear to be guilty but has also proven a liar.
But one thing bugs Vidya Jyothi. And eventually, she figures it out. Her doubts about the whole thing begin when she spots a faint smile Shailee gives to Saumya. After doing her own private investigation involving perusal or CCTV footage, she arrives at the truth: the woman who was paragliding with Dhruv and accused him of trying to kill her was not Saumya, but in fact, Shailee.
Sisters in arms: Did Saumya and Shailee collude to destroy Dhruv?
Indeed, they did, but it was all for the good cause. Although Vidya Jyothi does not want Dhruv to be imprisoned a minute more than he deserves (he got 10 years for an attempt to murder charge and 3 years for domestic violence), the audience’s sympathy is firmly with the two sisters after looking at Saumya being slapped, punched and even choked by her husband.
So what happened? Weren’t the two sisters implacable enemies? They were, but clearly some things are bigger than sibling spats. And seeing your sister abused by her husband, even if you liked him once, is one of them. After Shailee finds out about what Dhruv was doing to Saumya and learns that her sister is still not over her mother’s death (that’s why the meds and mental health issues), they cook up a plan. It involves Saumya going on a paragliding trip with Dhruv, but she would actually be Shailee dressed as Saumya. Mid-air, she would unfasten her harness and scream for help, saying her husband wanted to kill her. When they are eventually rescued, she will file a police complaint. Shailee would get rid of Dhruv for Saumya — well, not permanently, of course.
The plan works, but Vidya Jyothi confronts the two sisters. Using her law degree, she files a case against the sisters, and we are back in the courtroom. But Shailee tells another story in the witness box that changes Vidya’s mind.
How did Shailee and Saumya’s mother die?
While we see the death of Shailee and Saumya’s mother in the beginning and flashbacks peppered throughout the movie, it is only at the end we know the cause. Their father was abusive to her, though she suffered her abuse without protest for the sake of her daughters. One day, he became out of control and killed her. The sisters saw her mother’s body, which messed up their minds for good, Saumya’s particularly. And while many knew what had happened, nobody spoke against their father. The cause of their mother’s death was hushed up.
And now, the cycle was repeated with Dhruv and Saumya. But clearly, the sisters had had enough of powerful, abusive men. They fight back. After listening to the story, Vidya Jyothi takes her case back. The sisters reconcile and end their needless feud.
