Audemars Piguet has just released its lineup of new novelties for the first half of 2024, and in that lineup is the very cool Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar “John Mayer.”
As the official name implies, this is a collaboration between the American singer/guitarist. Known for his activity in the world of watch collecting, Mayer has long expressed his interest in Audemars Piguet. For this special release, the classic Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar receives what AP and Mayer call the “Crystal Sky” dial.
“My favourite watches have dials that you can stare endlessly at. A great watch dial feels like a picture window – you look into it, not at it. In the case of this QP, it’s like looking up at a moonless sky. There is a true sense of nature in it. And when you couple that sense of depth and vastness with the complication of a perpetual calendar, it is a very powerful combination of technical prowess and aesthetic design.”
The 41mm, 18-carat white gold watch’s dial was created using Physical Vapour Deposition (PVD) and electroforming for a distinct scintillating texture like a crystal formation. This also gives off a high level of depth thanks to the various hues of blue. The textured dial is complemented by subdials in a matching blue PVD colour, and the signature laser-microstructured moon phase indicator made with aventurine.
Ilaria Resta, Audemars Piguet’s Chief Executive Officer, comments, “John’s love of complicated watches combined with his creativity made this an organic and fun collaboration. He wholeheartedly delved into the intricate design details of the dial, so there is a moment of discovery each time the watch is worn, which gives us a glimpse of infinity.”
Other details specific to this edition include “Limited Edition” engraving, a smaller and stepped “31” on the date wheel, and a baby-blue week indicator that falls “back into the dial when simply reading the time but is easily found when looking to read the week complication. Limited to 200 examples, and priced at US $180,700, the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar “John Mayer” also closes the book on the self-winding perpetual calendar movement, as it is the last limited edition to be fitted with the Calibre 5134.
