After presenting a captivating Artisanal Collection in January, British fashion designer John Galliano has reportedly decided to leave Maison Margiela effective this Autumn after a decade at the luxury fashion house.
Rumors began to brew several months ago when Galliano cleared all posts from his Instagram account. According to sources, Galliano made the historic decision to exit despite requests by OTB Group president Renzo Rosso’s request for him to re-sign.
“As you know – and it is normal in our industry – there are always a lot of rumors when creative talents are concerned,” an OTB spokesman said in response to the whispers. “We never comment on them. All we can say is that relations between John Galliano, Maison Margiela and our group chairman Renzo Rosso, are very good.”
As for where he will be heading next, the most popular theories thus far include Chanel or a possible return to LVMH via either Fendi or Dior. Galliano was dismissed from his duties as creative director of Dior in 2011 after videos surfaced of him making antisemitic remarks at a café in Paris while inebriated. After three and half years of making amends, checking into rehab and conversing with Jewish leaders, he was appointed the creative director of Maison Margiela in October 2014.
Stay tuned for an official statement in the coming months.
