Japanese homeware brand MUJI has revealed its first major sportswear collaboration, crafting a minimalist footwear style dubbed “Court Sneakers” based on Reebok‘s iconic “Club C 85” silhouette.
Short for “Club Champion,” the Reebok Club C first arrived on the scene in 1985. Simple, sporty, and versatile, the pairs have remained an icon ever since. As MUJI looks to build out its daily wear lines, it has steadily expanded into footwear with the goal of creating classic shoes that can be used for a long time. As the perfect low-profile shoe for everyday wear, the Club C presented an opportunity for a natural union with Reebok.
Minimalist takes on the Club C 85 are nothing new, with the most famous take from the digital mood board turned design studio, JJJJound. MUJI’s spin on the pairs dials it back a notch further, removing all visible branding from the outside and optimising for ease of wear with an offset elastic pull tab on the heel. Maintaining a completely monochrome look, leather is used for the uppers, and classic sole units below are swapped out with outsoles containing Reebok’s proprietary DMX Microbubble tech.
Available in “Black” and “White,” the MUJI x Reebok sneakers officially release online and via select Muji stores in Japan on August 26. Domestic and international releases have yet to be announced.
